He was elected vice president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party at the National Convention in 2005 and was the party’s candidate for Vice President of the Republic in the 2012 presidential elections.
Presidential candidate at the PRM Convention held on April 26, 2015, elected with over 70% of the vote, a victory recognized from the first ballot by the other candidates. He immediately received the support of former President Hipólito Mejía, his main competitor in the convention, and the rest of the PRM leadership.
On July 5, 2020, he won the Presidency of the Dominican Republic with the support of 52.52% of the votes.
